    Jets Crash
Life is meaningless and full of pain.

I saw this one coming. Three missed field goals will always come back and bite you in the ass.

Great D, but Mark still has a lot of maturing to do.

With the Colts and the Bengals yet to come, I think we can kiss the playoffs goodbye.

And I'm not feeling good about the Giants game tomorrow either.

Comments are closed on Climate Change, a highly contentious issue which I actually never meant to raise. Grammar Whiz winners are [info]anselmo_b  for one understanding ("hit" as a noun) -- his the funniest of several takes running this way.  ANd [info]joculum and [info]proximoception for the sense the article had ("hit" as a verb).  It sounds slightly better in the original:

These resorts, which boasted top-flight entertainment — Woody Allen, Mel Brooks and Don Rickles were among the comedians who sharpened their wit on area stages — attracted upper-middle-class Jewish New Yorkers, nearly a million of whom migrated north as soon as the humidity hit to mambo in the mountain air.

These are usually guessed as as soon as I put them up, which makes me feel like a fool for having stumbled over them when my scanning eye lights on one in the paper (I mean the online ones, natch).  ANyway, make a grammatically correct and intelligible sentence out of this by adding words to either end or both ends. He'll be best remembered for ALIEN, but DARK STAR has a fond place in my heart as well. I hope somewhere he's surfing down like a meteor as "Benson, Arizona" plays on the cosmic soundtrack.

Bigger than the War on Terror
    From today's (12/18) NY Times:

Somewhat more substantively, in Washington, a group of House Republicans said they planned to introduce a resolution formally disapproving of the Environmental Protection Agency’s finding that greenhouse gases endangered public health and safety, a step that could lead to economy-wide regulation of such emissions. The Republicans said the finding would lead to job losses and take money out of the pockets of consumers “so that radical environmentalists can wage a war against nature.

    1. ASOIAF: Your top five pairings. Gushing is a bonus.
Sandor/Sansa : hit me hard from reading the book. It's an interesting mix of creepy and sweet and a great execution of the classic Beauty & Beast archetype. I remember when I first finished read CoK I went back to re-read all their chapters together ;)
Jaime/Brienne: they're so adorable and snarky together! Also love the reverse Beauty&Beast and the way it works on several layers (the honour as well as their appearance).
Theon/Jon: probably my favourite crack hatesex pairing for ASOIAF. Besides the hot hatesex appeal, it's an interesting pairing to explore their respective daddy issues and feeling of not!belonguing (which is exactly why they hate each others so much ^^)
Jaime/Loras: Well that scene where Jaime is all "Loras is minime!" and they are all cocky and snarky at each others is pretty awesome, thus pairing created. Yummy.
Cersei/Sansa: soooo messed up, but an excellent pairing to explore mindfuck and fairytale archetypes.

    2. Do you write at all in French? If so, is there a difference in what you write/how you write it? Speaking of which, is French your first language?
Well, I'm capable of writing in French, and it is my first language, but I seldom write fiction in it, at least not for a long time. I never wrote any fanfic in French (though my first Buffy fanfics got translated back in the days).
I think there' a difference in how we wrote any languages because of the inherent differences between languages lol so yes. They have their own rhythm, sonorities, structures, so of course it influences how we write. I find writing in English helps me not feeling like it "sounds false" when I write fanfiction.

    3. If you could change just one thing about the world, what would it be? Discuss.
I'd like to make people more aware about issues of racism, sexism, homophobia etc. not just the way they seem obvious, but the way they seep in everywhere unconsciously.

    4. Dancing with the Wolves or Singing in the Rain? Why one and not the other?
Errr, one's a racist overly long movie with Kevin Costner and the other is a charming and fun musical. I think I'll take Singing in the Rain!!

    5. Just very randomly, your opinions on Tolkien? I don't remember whether or not you're involved at all with that fandom etc etc.
I'm not in the fandom, though I read Lord of the Rings many times when I was younger. I don't have any particular opinion (especially since I haven't read it in a loooong time). He's a good writer with a lot of qualities, but neither do I think he's the best ever; I find accusations of manicheism etc. levelled at his writing are very unfair since his work was much more nuanced and his characterisation contained many grey areas. Anyway if you wanna know, my favourite part of the book was the return to the shire, my favourite character Faramir, and my favourite pairings Legolas/Gimli, Merry/Pippin, Faramir/Eowyn; and I had a big soft spot for all the almost-mostly-evil characters like Saroumane, Gollum, Grima & Orcs who captured Merry & Pippy #1 & 2. I never liked Gandalf.
I liked the movies but mostly for opposite reasons to what I liked in the books.

    an ethical dilemma..
Dear LJ friends, sorry for being crap at updating, but please help me out with this one as I don't know what to do..

My dad is back in hospital again. He had an op last week to have his gallbladder removed, and he came through it ok, but he's still in a lot of pain, and I'm not sure he's going to get out before christmas. Kit and I had planned to spend christmas with his family, but I'm thinking I should really go over to France. Problem is, flights are horrendously expensive, so there is no way Kit could joine me at any stage, and it means we spend the whole of his christmas holidays apart. I really don't know what to do.

    LJ Paid account discount
Turns out that LJ is letting me, as a current Paid/Permanent account-holder, send out ten $10 coupons to use against an annual Paid account. (In less convoluted terms, you can buy a Paid account for one year for $9.95/$15, instead of $19.95/$25.)

If anybody's interested, give me a shout.

    Perfume
I think I might have gone a little crazy over at The Perfumed Court. I bought 46 perfume samples from Chanel, Miller Harris, and Issey Miyake.

Now I'd rather do this than buy a full bottle of anything that I later find out smells horrible/I don't like/I react to, PLUS I use perfume infrequently enough that these will last a long time. Still, when I think about it (and where on earth I'm going to put all of these 1ML bottles), I wonder what I've let mysef in for.

ETA: Perfect timing. I actually got a shipping notice about 20 minutes ago. I'll let you know when it arrives, so you can all hold your collective noses as I try everything. :p

    Green Sunday
It was a good day to be wearing green in the NFL.

The Jets won their morning game convincingly, even with Mark Sanchez nursing his knees back in New York City and Kellen Clemens playing abysmally in his stead. Hardly mattered. Gang Green's running game was hitting, and the defense played lights out. Of course, they were in Tampa Bay playing this year's Bucs, so it hardly counted. Josh Freeman, the heralded Bucs rookie QB, looked just awful, but maybe some of that was Rex Ryan's D. Still, these Bucs are so bad they ought to make them go back and wear the creamsicle uniforms until they start playing better.

The Jets are still in the playoff hunt, but just barely. They pretty much have to win out, and with the Colts and the Bengals on their schedule, I think that's unlikely. And next week they have to beat Atlanta, who have a bad record but gave the Saints all they could handle today.

Green Bay won as well. Another "green" team.

And, sadly, this evening the midnight green Iggles of Philadelphia defeated my Giants in a heartbreaker. All the talking heads are saying what a great game it was. Pfui. It was an EXCITING game, yes. The G-Men came out stumbling and spotted the Iggles to a two touchdown lead, then battled back for the rest of the game. Every time they closed the gap to one score the Eagles would get punch in another one and widen it again. Finally the Giants managed to take a one-point lead at 31-30... only to have the Eagles get a long TD on the very first play after the kickoff. The scoring continued after that, and finally ended 45-38 in favor of Philadelphia. The Giants racked up a ridiculous number of passing yards, and both teams left points on the board. McNabb missed one wide-open receiver who was streaking downfield for what should have been a certain touchdown, receiver Mario Manningham of the G-Men had two endzone receptions disallowed for having one foot out of bounds, and his fellow wideout Hakeem Nicks had a couple of TD passes bounce off his hands. There was also a Giants linebacker who dropped what would have been a certain pick-six served up by McNabb. It too bounced off his hands. (And weirdly, it wasn't a pass after all, but a forward fumble, but after our LB dropped it players on both teams just ignored the live ball lying there on the grass). There were fumbles, a punt return for a TD, an freaky pass broken up by an Eagle that caromed off his thigh into the hands of the Giants tight end... lots of crazy, colorful, thrilling stuff. Both teams played hard.

But a great game? Pfui. For fans like me, who appreciate defense, it was far from that. Neither team brought their defense, from what I saw. The Giants certainly proved themselves unable to stop the Eagles. After ranking as the best defense in the NFL at season's start, our D has fallen apart. Especially the pass rush. McNabb had all day back there. Eli played one of the best games I have ever seen him play -- his stats were off the charts, and would have been obscene if Manningham could have stayed in bounds and Nicks could have caught the balls that were bouncing off him -- despite the fact that he was under pressure every snap. McNabb, on the other hand, could have filled out and filed his tax return in the pocket on a couple of those plays. What the hell happened to the Giants' fearsome pass rush? We have the same players as last year and the year before. With added depth; by rights we should be better. But Bill Sheridan, our new defensive coordinator, does not have them playing the same agressive attacking style that Spags did last year, that has made a world of difference. Sheridan needs to go. I want my Big Blue D back. I like winning games 13-10 much more than losing them 45-38.

Oddly, despite the loss, the Giants may still have a better chance of making the playoffs than the Jets do, provided the Cowboys continue their traditional December collapse. But I am not holding my breath. Next week's game against the Redskins has the look of a classic trap game. After getting up emotionally for the big games against Dallas and Phillie, the Giants are all too likely to suffer a bad letdown against the Skins and get upset, which would effectively end their season. I've seen it happen before. And Washinton is better than its record. And even if they get past the Skins, the Vikings are waiting at season's end. The only silver lining in the clouds over the Meadowlands is the fact that the Giants own the tiebreakers over the Cowboys, so if both teams finish with the same record, New York goes to the playoffs and Dallas stays home. But right now Dallas is a game up.

Life is magical... but full of pain.

    Posting
I really am trying to be even more aware of how I phrase things, and so on. Not because I never want to offend someone, but because I want my offense to be deliberate. :p

With that in mind, if I write something that offends you, or which you find problematic, I'm open to receiving comments. Now, I'll probably be upset. I might not understand what you're pointing out. If I do understand, I might just disagree whether I should change that post/phrase, or I might have done it deliberately.

In any case, I will not reply by telling you you can't read, or that you're just too stupid to get it. Not only does it simply avoid accepting any responsibility, it also pisses me the fuck off when someone does it to me, and automatically drops my opinion of the person who says it. I don't expect you to always agree with me, nor I with you, but I don't want your opinions of me to drop (further and/or if they can :p).

    More Shaxper
I was able to catch the Globe Theater company's touring production of Love's Labour's Lost in Holyoke, where they performed in a wonderful (and unrenovated) WPA theater or rather public auditorium space called the War Memorial Auditorium (1936). Still with beautiful Art Deco eagles and the zigzag paneling of the wooden doors; still the original oil portraits of Washington, Pershing and FDR on the walls. Holyoke is one of the poorest cities in Massachusetts, a nearly deserted town center of smoke-blackened churches and boarded store-fronts; a high percentage of the population is recent immigrants. Why the Globe booked this place rather than a place in the midst of the five College haven of upscale commerce and culture I don;t know, but it was gratifying, and I studied the audience (at L.'s behest) to see who composed it. (Many older people, some schoolkids given free tickets for the matinee -- not many locals perhaps, but who knows?)

The performance was wonderful and spirited in the best modern British mode, like the All's Well I saw broadcast recently, and with the truly wonderful Michelle Terry (Helena in All's Well, among the very best performances in Shakespeare I've ever seen) as the French princess. She much outshown the Rosaline, which somewhat unbalanced the show. The Berowne had a rather thick Northern accent, or maybe Scots? which for an American audience made his convoluted speeches hard to follow; he was personable and funny but didn't have that attack on the verse that's so new now among the Brits, finding depths and sudden shifts of feeling you don't expect, all as though it were being heard and spoken for the first time. The young and tiny woman who played Moth was perfect, and the Don Armado was not the usual braggart soldier but a mild-eyed, shy, self-conscious, inarticulate unfortunate. I loved it.

    Christmas Special
The end of the year is almost upon us, and the holidays are bearing down like a freight train, so it must be time for a Christmas sale.

From now until the end of the year, I'm offering special discounts on three of the hardcover books offered on the Signed Books page of my website.

The Meisha Merlin trade hardcover of TUF VOYAGING, with a cover by Michael Komarck and interior illustrations by Janet Aulisio, normally sells for $29.

The Bantam Spectra hardcover reissue of WINDHAVEN, my collaboration with Lisa Tuttle, sells for $26 on the website.

And INSIDE STRAIGHT, first volume in Tor's new Wild Cards triad, goes for $27.

You can also get all three of these books for $69.

But those are the normal prices. From now through the end of the year, as a Christmas special, I'm offering each of the hardcovers for $20, or all three for $57.

Those prices include Book Rate (Media Mail) shipping within the United States. If you would prefer Priority Mail, please add $5 for a single book, or $10 for more than one. Overseas and out-of-country shipping is more; please inquire.

And of course I'm always willing to sign and inscribe the books.

((Oh, and while the supply lasts, the copies of INSIDE STRAIGHT I'll be sending out are signed by Daniel Abraham and Melinda Snodgrass as well. But I have less than 20 of those, so once they're gone, it will be just my own autograph)).

    Happy holidays, and good reading.

    Marvelous Miniatures
Just wanted to share some more of the wonderful Ice & Fire miniatures from Dark Sword.

First, some lovely painted versions of Prince Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne, and Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain That Rides, dueling for the life of Tyrion Lannister. Tom Meier did the sculpts, and Matt Verzani painted these for the Dark Sword studio collection.

    Prince Oberyn:

    The Mountain:

    The Duel:

Tom is always so exacting about scale and size with his sculpts; I love how this pairing brings home Ser Gregor's monstrous size in such a vivid and visceral way. And of course Matt has done a wonderful job with the paint, as always.

And while Matt's been busy with his brush, Tom has been sculpting up a storm in his studio, and we have some great new greens to add to the range. These aren't in production yet, but look for them soon.

    Here's Arya:

    And Sansa:

    Lady Catelyn:

And a personal favorite, Sansa building her snow castle at the Eyrie:

For more information and pictures, visit the Dark Sword website at http://darkswordminiatures.com/ And remember, miniatures make wonderful stocking stuffers for all the Ice & Fire fans in the family.
